ARTS AND CULTURE SHSM, PORTFOLIO DEVELOPMENT


What is an Arts and Culture SHSM?  

The Arts and Culture Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program at St. Pius will provide an opportunity for students in grade 11 and 12 to build a professional portfolio while providing students:

  • An opportunity to experience a range of experiential learning opportunities in an area of the creative arts  that interests them (Music, Drama, Photography, Design or Visual Arts.

  • The opportunity to explore, identify, and refine career goals and make informed decisions related to post-secondary education or training and next steps towards a career while building an individual portfolio based on post secondary requirements.

  • An opportunity to gain confidence in their ability to succeed, and see the connections between their studies, the world beyond high school, and their future careers.

  • Attend a conference, symposium, or job fair

  • Explore careers in the arts through work placements

  • Networking with local arts-based businesses

  • Participate in an arts-focused competition and deep learning activities

  • Tour local (and some not so local) museums, theatres, and art galleries

  • Develop a partnership with local and provincial post-graduate institutions such as: Algonquin College, University of Ottawa, Carleton University, Sheridan College, OCAD University and others.

  • Graduate with a SHSM seal of designation on your secondary school diploma

  • Earn a Specialist High Skills Major designation on OSSD transcript

  • Qualify for special scholarship opportunities.

  • Gain valuable industry-specific work experience and knowledge.

  • Develop personal management, communication and leadership skills.
