Dear parent/guardian,

CSPA, the board's parent group, presents an information night for parents called "Supporting Big Emotions; your action plan for supporting big emotions, yours and your child's".  This will take place on Thursday April 20 starting at 7:00 at St. Matthew H.S. On Thursday April 27 there will be a session called, "Recognizing and supporting the mental health needs of our children and youth", at 7:00 pm at Immaculata High school.  You can get more info about these on the board website.

As part of the program at St. Pius X we run assemblies designed to raise awareness about specific topics with targeted groups of our students.  This pas Monday our Gr. 9 students heard a presentation on social media safety.  They were challenged to take precautions to ensure that their social media platforms do not get taken over by others and on appropriate use of social media.  The message was particularly strong on thinking about what you share on-line.  Once you put it out there it is out there and you have given up control.  Your can continue to challenge your daughter or son to take these messages to heart.  On Mon April 24 our Gr. 10 and 11 students will see a presentation from Mothers Against Drunk Driving on the dangers of driving while impaired as well as on making good decisions when in risky situations.  On Tuesday April 25 a group of our female students will hear a talk on "female empowerment", which complements the work our GLOW group (Girls Leading our World) has been doing this year.

Have you been thinking about applying for next year's 3 month exchange to Spain hosted by Ken's Education Group, one of our educational exchange partners? There are still FIVE SPOTS available for Ottawa students to join in on this once in a lifetime experience. Please visit Student Services today to receive an application form and brochure! Applications are due by email to the local coordinator no later than next Wednesday, April 19, contact: for more info.

We are looking forward to the return of our Vimy Trip group on Friday April 14.  Nineteen of our students with three staff were part of a board group of over 100 that participated in the 100th anniversary celebrations of the Vimy Ridge battle.  They were able to participate in some very moving commemorations as well as visit sites of significance throughout France with a focus on Paris.  Next week we have a group of students headed to Washington, DC as part of a trip sponsored by our Contemporary Studies department.  Thanks to teachers who take on the task of organizing and supervising these trips.  Without their work these activities would not happen.  Thanks also to parents who turn over their sons/daughters to our care for these adventures!

A reminder that as you look towards the summer, consider opportunities for your son or daughter to earn their community service hours.  All students in Ontario are required to earn at least 40 hours of community service in order to graduate; many of our students do much more than this.  You can talk to the guidance counsellors about ideas and to confirm if what you are planning to do meets the guidelines for what is considered community service.  Two starting questions to ask when considering whether something would be considered community service are: am I providing a service to someone in need? am I doing work that someone should be getting paid to do?  You need to answer "yes" to the first and "no" to the second!  It is always best to come in and check with guidance before committing to some work.  Our Phys Ed teachers can give you info about a good community service opportunity at Game On Sports Camp, open to those who have finished Grade 9.   There are a number of other opportunities listed in student services.  Check them out.  Don't wait until your Grade 12 year to get this done.

Next Thursday April 20 we will be distributing Semester 2 mid-term report cards.  Make sure you ask your son or daughter to share theirs with you.

Also on April 20 we will be holding Easter Liturgies for all our students.  These are not masses but prayer services led by our Chaplain Richie, challenging us all to reflect on the meaning that the Easter season has in our lives today.

Finally a reminder that our next School Council meeting will be held this Tuesday April 18 at 7:00 in the school library.  All are welcome to attend these parent meetings.

A reminder to please check out the calendar on our website for a full listing of school events.

Have a great long weekend, enjoy your Good Friday and Easter Monday holidays.  School resumes next Tuesday.
