Principal's e-letter December 2, 2016

posted Dec 2, 2016, 11:20 AM by William Barrett
Dear parent/guardian,

Congrats to our Student Council for a very successful "Casino Royale" semi-formal dinner dance this past Wed.  We had over 180 students come together in their best attire, sharing a good meal followed by lots of great dancing.  The event was well organized and a fun evening.  Great positive SPX energy!

A reminder to encourage your daughter/son to support our Advent charitable giving campaigns.  Students have the chance to support the Mitten Tree (gently used or new winter clothing), Toy Mountain (thru a Pancake Breakfast later in December) and Food Hampers for needy families (homerooms will adopt a family).

SPX Drama students present, "A Play About a Dragon", on Dec 7, 8 and 9, starting at 7:00 pm in the cafetorium.  Tickets are only $5 for this family friendly production.  Come out and enjoy the show!

Next Friday Dec 9 is our second ATC event of the year.  Students are encouraged to come out and be part of this community service which provides a social evening for adults in the Ottawa area with special needs.  All students are welcome but they must sign-up for a ticket, by seeing Ms. Donahue or Mr. Boucher.

Our local city councillor, Riley Brockington, extends an invite to you and your family to his Christmas Social on Tues Dec 13 from 6 - 8 pm at the Carleton Heights Community Centre.

Parents of students in Grade 12 a reminder that applications to Ontario universities are due January 11 and to Ontario colleges by Feb 1.  Students or parents with any questions should contact their guidance counsellor before Dec 23.

A reminder about homework support at St. Pius X.  In addition to the individual time that most teachers have set up, the following are available:
-StepUP, every Wed and Thurs after school in the library (2:45 - 3:45).  All are welcome to come for help from staff and senior students
-we have begun an after school Numeracy class for Grade 9 students.  This is a chance to get some extra math help.  It is also a useful preparation for the upcoming Gr. 9 EQAO Math test which all Semester One Grade 9 Math students will write in January.
-finally a new support, the school board has partnered with Voila Learning which provides free on-line homework help in French, English and Math.  Go to ViolaLearning.com and enter the code: BonjourVoila.

A final note: when the school board cancels transportation due to inclement weather schools remain open and OC Transpo continues to run.  At St. Pius X we have no yellow school buses and we will do our best to run a regular day of classes.   Some classroom activities may change but most teachers will carry on as usual (even if your daughter/son tells you differently!).  On these days and you are encouraged to send your son/daughter to school if they can get here safely.

Have a good weekend!
