Dear parent/guardian,

Thanks to all who came out to our Parent Information Night.  The two presentations,  going into Gr. 10 - 12 and going into Gr. 9 will be posted on the school website.  There is also information on the the school board website about program pathways, course selection and the transition to high school from elementary.

Student services staff have begun class visits, helping students with the course selection process.  Course selection is done on-line through MyBlueprint.  Please feel free to contact Student Services if you have any questions.  The deadline for having courses selected for next year is Wed March 1.  On Friday Feb 24 we will have the Gr. 8 students from Frank Ryan here for a visit and to learn about the transition to Gr. 9.  Thanks to our staff and the peer helpers who will be welcoming them to SPX.

Today was Welcome Wagon, the Winter Edition, for our Grade 9 students.  The peer helpers and rec leadership students organize games for the Gr. 9 homerooms.  The competition was spirited and lots of fun was had by all.  Congrats to Mr. Scullion's homeroom who were selected as this year's champs.  Will next year's Gr. 9's have the same great spirit?

Thanks to all that received an Immunization notice from Ottawa Public Health and followed up on it, getting your son or daughter's immunizations and paperwork up-to-date.  There are still a small number of students that need to complete this.  Please contact OPH at 613-5580-6744 or if you have any questions.

Next week is Kindness Week in the City of Ottawa and at St. Pius X.  We will be focussing on the themes of gratitude and anti-bullying.  Today students were challenged to think of things they are grateful for and also to consider ways to spend time with their family, especially on this coming Monday's Family Day holiday.  On Wed Feb 22 all students are encouraged to wear a pink shirt as part of Ontario's Pink Shirt Day, which is an anti-bullying initiative.  This activity is being promoted by our HUGS and Pius Cares groups who lead our efforts to make our school a welcoming and inclusive place for all students.  Last Tuesday members of the HUGS group did a presentation to staff on "Hate Language".  They had a powerful message for staff and their power to challenge students to consider the words they use.  Words that are commonly used as put-downs can have a powerful impact on some of our more vulnerable students.

The school board's parent group, CSPA, is hosting a parent info session on Thurs March 2 at 7:00 at Holy Trinity H.S..  The session is called, "Well Being, our students, your children, a common goal".  All are welcome.  Check out the board website for more info.

Please check out the calendar on our website for a full listing of events.

Have a good weekend!
