We had a great day today, Friday, welcoming the Gr. 8 students from Frank Ryan here for a visit and to learn about the transition to Gr. 9. Thanks to our staff and the peer helpers who organized the day. The class of 2021 was warmly welcomed!!
Thanks to all who received an Immunization notice from Ottawa Public Health and followed up on it, getting your son or daughter's immunizations and paperwork up-to-date. Unfortunately we have had to follow through with some suspensions of students who have not gotten their immunizations up to date. These people are encouraged to contact OPH at 613-580-6744, ext. 28020 or firstname.lastname@example.org to get this cleared up and their son/daughter back into school.
We have come to the end of Kindness Week. At SPX we focussed on the themes of gratitude and anti-bullying. Initiatives were led by our Pius Cares and HUGS teams. Thanks to the students and staff involved in making our school a more welcoming and inclusive place for all. On a related theme, encourage your son/daughter to bring in cans for our annual "Royals/X-men Canned Food Drive". We are aiming for 10,000 food items this year and are off to a good start. All cans go to support the food bank at Shepherds of Good Hope.
Next week our Student council is running a spirit week. The main activity is various dress up days. Encourage your son/daughter to join in and earn points for their grade. Mon is Plaid Day, Tues is Twin Day, Wed is Jersey Day, Thurs is Denim Day and Fri is Grade Colour day. Also this week we will hold Ash Wednesday liturgies for all students. These will take place the morning of Wed March 1 and are led by our chaplain Richie!! Ash Wednesday begins the Christian season of Lent, a time to reflect on our lives, what we are grateful for and also how we can be better, both in our personal lives and in service to others. I know Richie will challenge us all to be the "best version of ourselves that we can" as he usually does.

One final item for your attention:
-Ottawa Police and Public Health have asked us to share the following notice with our parent community about the problem of counterfeit prescription drugs and fentanyl that some students are using. Last week a student at All Saints High School died after taking a counterfeit prescription drug and we have just learned that a former student at Holy Trinity passed away from an overdose earlier in January. You are encouraged to read the notice and talk with your son/daughter about it. Counsellors at the school are aware of the issue and are talking with students who may be at particular risk about the dangers they may face. Go to this link for their notice
A reminder to please check out the calendar on our website for a full listing of school events.
Have a good weekend!
