Dear parent/guardian,

This past week was Education Week across the province, a chance to celebrate the many good things that go on in our schools.  At St. Pius X we did the following:

-ran a number of Indigenous Awareness activities thru the week
-had six classes participate in the city's Spring Cleaning the Capital (we gathered 11 bags of garbage from the community)
-our dance team participated in the school board's Dance Showcase
-teacher Lili Bastianelli received a Director of Education award for outstanding work in our school and board
-did some collaborative activities with St. Augustine: rocket launching with the Grade 6's and reading French stories with Grade 1
-had our annual cake auction where we raised $2200 for Me to We charity work
-had our final ATC event of the year (a bbq, games and dance for adult members of the special needs community in Ottawa)

Another very special event was our annual Education Week mass, held on Thursday May 4, where we bused our Grade 9 to 11 students and the Grade 8 class from Frank Ryan to St. Maurice for a mass celebrated by the pastor Fr. Tim Devine.  We had great attendance, the church including the balcony was full.  Mass was followed by a reception in the parish hall where students were treated to 600 cupcakes made by Ms. Barnes one of our staff.

On Thursday the Grade 12 students had a graduation events assembly, where the teachers involved in the various grad activities talked through details of their activity.  Students heard about the upcoming Grad Retreat (May 9), the prom (May 26), Grad Mass (June 7) and the Grad Ceremony (June 28).  Parents of graduating students should check in with their son/daughter if you have questions about these events.  A reminder that these are the only graduation related events supported by the school.  There may be other events that you hear about but they are not sanctioned by the school.  This is a good opportunity to talk about enjoying the celebration of high school graduation but making good decisions around how to celebrate.  We don't want to have students involving themselves in activities that lead to sanctions from the school and losing the opportunity to be involved in the official grad activities.

We celebrate our Jr. Girls Volleyball team which won the Tier 2 City Championship on Monday, defeating Sacred Heart, 3 sets to 0.  This event capped off a great season for the team and marks the first girls volleyball title for our school since 1987!!  Also, last Friday the Girls Touch Football team won silver in a tournament they participated in at Beatrice Desloges.  Great work to all of our sports teams, the spring athletic season is well underway!

The school board has put out some information for parents about the Netflix series, "Thirteen Reasons Why", which deals with teen suicide.  You can access the information at the following link

Finally, on Tuesday we ran our second lockdown drill of the school year (we are mandated to run two drills per year).  This drill was called when students were moving between classes and was designed to help them consider how they could get themselves into a safe, secure and out-of-sight location if they were not already in a classroom.  Students and staff handled themselves very well in this potentially confusing situation.  Thanks to them for their cooperation.  We apologize for any disruption to plans that this drill may have caused.

A reminder to please check out the calendar on our website for a full listing of school events.

Have a good weekend!
