Dear parent/guardian,

We have come to the end of "Financial Literacy Week" at St. Pius X.  Our Math department organized a number of activities to encourage students to consider what they really know about using money in their day to day lives and also getting them to think about their financial future.  It was a good week with some friendly competition and lots of practical math going on in whatever class students were in.

A final reminder that in the spring our school will be joining a number of other schools in the board to go to Europe as part of the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.  The trip takes place from April 5 - 14.  There are still spots available if you are interested.  Contact Ms. Goldsmith or check out: www.explorica.ca (use the tour code: OCSBGoldsmith-1917).

We are beginning our Advent charitable giving campaigns.  Students have the chance to support the Mitten Tree (gently used or new winter clothing), Toy Mountain (thru a Pancake Breakfast later in December) and Food Hampers for needy families (homerooms will adopt a family).  Encourage your son or daughter to join in however they can.  Special thanks to our Parent Council who decided to do a food hamper at our last meeting.

This Wed evening Student Council hosts the annual semi-formal dinner dance, a long time Pius tradition.  This event takes places at the Centurion Banquet Hall, doors open at 6:00,dinner is served at 7:00, and the event ends by 10:00.  On Thurs we will have liturgies to kick off the Advent spiritual season.  On Friday the second GLOW (Girls Leading our World) event will take place from 3:00 - 4:30.  All of our female students are invited to join this session.  For your longer range planning, our Drama students present "A play about a dragon" on Dec 7 - 9.  More details to follow.  Come out and enjoy the show!

Homework support at St. Pius X:
-a reminder that we run our after school homework help club, StepUP, every Wed and Thurs after school in the library (2:45 - 3:45).  All are welcome to come for help from staff and senior students
-we have begun an after school Numeracy class for Grade 9 students.  This is a chance to get some extra math help.  It is also a useful preparation for the upcoming Gr. 9 EQAO Math test which all Semester One Grade 9 Math students will write in January.
-finally a new support, the school board has partnered with Voila Learning which provides free on-line homework help in French, English and Math.  Go to ViolaLearning.com and enter the code: BonjourVoila.

Have a good weekend!
