Dear parent/guardian,

I am looking forward to the Thanksgiving weekend, a chance to spend time with friends and family and hopefully enjoy some beautiful fall weather.  I hope that your weekend is a good one.  Tomorrow, Friday Oct 7, is our first pd day.   Most of our school board community gathers at the downtown convention centre to be renewed in our faith and in our commitment to doing the best job we can to educate your daughter/son.

Your son/daughter should have brought home a letter describing the on-line process for signing up for Parent-Teacher interviews.  The system opens on Thurs Oct 13 at 8:00 pm.  Interviews take place on Wed Oct 19 from 2:30 - 5:00 and from 6:00 - 8:00.  Information is also available on the school website .  On Oct 12 we will be mailing home Letters of Concern for students whom teachers feel are not achieving what they can in the class at this stage in the school year.  Hopefully this early intervention can encourage your daughter/son to renew their commitment to doing the best they can. There will also be information about our after-school homework help club, StepUp, which will begin on Oct 26 and run most Wednesdays and Thursdays through the school year.  All are welcome.

Some parents should have received invites through their son/daughter to our Academic Awards ceremony which will be held at 8:45 on Tues Oct 18 in the cafetorium.  This is a chance to acknowledge students who were top achievers in their courses last year.

Yesterday four of our phys ed classes had the chance to hear Martha McCabe a two-time Canadian Olympian speak.  Martha spoke about the commitment needed to achieve excellence and strategies she used to perform at a high level.  Most of us are not Olympic level but all of us can strive to do our best at whatever we do.  Martha helped reinforce the challenge to excellence that we believe all of our St. Pius X students can achieve.

A heads up for parents of students in Gr. 11 and 12 that Pius will be hosting a University Information Night on Wed Oct 26 from 6:30 to 8:30.  There will be reps from 21 Ontario universities here to talk about their schools.  All are welcome.  More detail will be on the website shortly.

Last week I mentioned a variety of clubs that students can join.  I neglected to mention a Math Club that Mrs. Chiarelli runs every Monday after school.  This is a chance to test out your math knowledge and challenge yourself on some high level math.

The school board's parent group, CSPA, offers the first of many parent info sessions on Nov 3 at 7:00 pm at St. Paul H.S.  The session is called: "Intro to self-regulation-stress behaviour vs misbehaviour" and will be led by Dr. Stuart Shanker.  More info on the board or school website.

Our local council, Riley Brockington, will host a Community Safety Night on Wed Oct 19 from 6 - 8:30.  Learn more about safety preparation in our city.  Contact his office for more information (613-580-2486).

One last reminder to submit your student fee, change to registration info form and especially your consent to release form.  The fee supports student activity at Pius; the reg form means we have your current contact info; and the consent form allows us to celebrate activities at our school through our yearbook and website.  Please get them in if you have not.  Thanks to those of you, the majority, who have gotten the forms and money in.  We appreciate your support!

Have a great long weekend!
